Class Calendar & Descriptions


This is a more advanced sewing class that builds upon basic sewing skills. Continue to add new sewing skills with New Look 6374- a wonderful top with set-in sleeves, stand-up collar, placket front and shirt tail hem. Top requires approximately 2-1/2 yards of 45 inch wide fabric. Pattern will be provided by the teacher. Cost is $5.00, payable to the teacher. This is a 3-session class.

Start on the road to sewing success and learn basic sewing skills and techniques whether you have never sewed before or just want to refresh skills. Learn how to read and use a pattern, basic construction techniques including pockets, topstitching and machine hemming. Begin and complete an All-in-One butcher apron in this two session class. Bring your own sewing machine.

We will be using New Look 6106 pattern to make a skirt so you can learn new sewing techniques, including: zipper, waistband, and front slash pockets. Pattern will be provided by the teacher and will cost each student $5.00, payable to the teacher at the class. This is a three part class.

This class is intended for quilters who have done some free motion quilting, and would like to improve their skills. Emphasis will be on quilting feathers and various background patterns without marking.

A two session lecture/demonstration class for those familiar with sewing or quilting who are looking for a refresher course with all of the latest basic techniques. Lots of class handouts and patterns for a homework project are included.

Foundation Paper Piecing will show you how to make intricate, accurate blocks with ease and precision. Anyone can do it! In this class you will make a block which can stand alone, or be combined for a larger beautiful block. You will also learn how to make fast, perfect half square triangles using Triangles on a Roll. Don't miss this chance to learn this useful technique!

Therapy sewing becomes art. When you don't know what to do next, when your current project has hit the wall, when you can't sew because you don't know where to start, do some "therapy sewing." Sew free-hand cut strips into units. Create windows without worrying whether they are straight or even. Combine commercial prints with batiks and add some hand-printed fabrics. There are no mistakes in this class.

Try your hand at miniature quilt making using a theme of your choice (favorite hobby, flowers, seasons, sports, animals, etc.). This class will put a new "spin" on the techniques used to create a traditional pinwheel block. You'll learn fun and new ways of making half-square triangles and other quilting techniques that you may not have used before. Plan to have fun while you watch your miniature "gem" come to life.

Learn the art of hand embroidery in this class using the "Though of the Month-Month 5, Stitched with Love" pattern by Hug's N kisses. Lynda Shephard will show you how to use a Sulky product to transfer your pattern to a sticky backed item placed on top of your fabric. You will stitch through the transferred pattern and your background fabric at the same time. Hand tracing and an embroidery hoop are not needed for this fun and simple technique.

Using two colors of fabric, we will explore the art of free-hand cutting using the Peppermint Pinwheels pattern in Sujata Shah's book, "Cultural Fusion Quilts." Your inspiration could be a sunset in orange and purple, sunflowers in yellow and green, or even the Arizona Cardinals in red and black/white. Whatever your fancy, the colors are limitless.

Learn the basics of free motion quilting, including stipple quilting, improvising, and following printed designs. Your sewing machine should provide either dropped feed dogs or covered feed dogs. A darning foot is required and preperation of practice pieces as specified in class handout, before class.

Come on an adventure with us and explore the art of scrap quilting. Using up scraps and orphan blocks from other projects is part of our quilting heritage. Today, advances let us build scrap quilts out of new fabrics such as fat quarters, layer cakes, charm packs, Bali Pops and more. You can bring your scraps, orphans and/or pieces from your stash, or even buy your scraps. We will build some blocks in class that you can add to your home.

Seminole design was developed by the Seminole Indian tribe of Florida, primarily for embellishing clothing. In her book "Simply Seminole," Dorothy Hanisko points out that the same techniques used to create one-of-a-kind clothing can be used to create one-of-a-kind quilts. We will explore four types of Seminole designs--alternate, stair step, floating and angle--and create a small sample of each.
